Handout I for the lecture course QUANTUM FIELD THEORY

چکیده

In order to help the Mathematicians to follow the lecture, we collect basic definitions and results in quantum mechanics which we will need. We do not provide derivations, nor do we thoroughly motivate the definitions. It must suffice that the formalism of quantum mechanics has proven extremely useful in the sense that the theory has an enormous wealth of predictive power and an extremely hight precision. The formalism is the result of a evolution process lasting several decades, where the theory nowadays called quantum mechanics was established which successfully resolved all the puzzles a classical physics description of many phenomena and observations in atomic physics, nuclear physics, optics and other areas posed.

Handout III for the lecture course QUANTUM FIELD THEORY

Since term is coming to an end soon, and due to some lectures I had to skip, I cannot present all the material in the lecture course I initially had planned. Thus, I collect here briefly some stuff on the quantization of the Dirac field in the canonical formalism, which I have not (anymore) time to present in the lecture. The main difficulty or difference in quantizing a fermion compared to qua...

Handout V for the lecture course QUANTUM FIELD THEORY

We have seen in the lecture that quantum field theories do need renormalization in the perturbative approach. We learned that renormalization is a necessity with deep physical content, and not just an annoyance. It forces upon us to introduce new physical quantities, i.e. quantities with dimensions, which enable us to connect the generic theory to the real world and experimental observation. Ho...

A mini-course on topological strings

These are the lecture notes for a short course in topological string theory that I gave at Uppsala University in the fall of 2004. The notes are aimed at PhD students who have studied quantum field theory and general relativity, and who have some general knowledge of ordinary string theory. The main purpose of the course is to cover the basics: after a review of the necessary mathematical tools...

Undergraduate Lecture Notes in Topological Quantum Field Theory

These third–year lecture notes are designed for a 1–semester course in topological quantum field theory (TQFT). Assumed background in mathematics and physics are only standard second–year subjects: multivariable calculus, introduction to quantum mechanics and basic electromagnetism.

Handout Ix to the Lecture Symmetries in Physics

After having learned quite a lot about Lie groups, Lie algebras and their representation theory, it would be nice to see, where all this knowledge is put to use in physics. It might also be nice, to learn a bit about where finite groups appear in physics. To fill this gap, I will offer a seminar in the winter term 2010/11, which is entirely devoted to just these topics. Possible suggestions for...
